Religious Writings
- I start here with two Maryland Daily Record columns I wrote that attempt to convey the experience of being A Lawyer and a Believer:
- In my congregation (St. Vincent de Paul in Baltimore), laypeople homilize throughout the night on Easter. Here are some homiletics from Easters past:
Subcreation: From Eden to the New Jerusalem (Easter 2007)
Abraham and Isaac : Deciding About Sacrifice (Easter 2006)
Two Trees (Easter 2014)
David: An (Un)Original Sinner (Easter 2015)
The Book of Job: Little Things and Great Ones (Easter 2016)
God’s Extravagant Creation (Easter 2017)
- In a review in National Catholic Reporter, I consider physicist Stephen Hawking’s attempted debunking of the notion that there is a God:
Hawking’s bottom line: We just don’t have the answers (January 5, 2011) [Note this is a link, not a post].
- The moral and personal challenge posed by the encounter with panhandlers:
The Poor You Have Always In Your Face (November 30, 2011)
I read, and liked very much your review of Stephen Hawking’s book THE GRAND DESIGN in NCR. I thought you might like to take a look at this link to a blog that I follow. The writer, a wrongly imprisoned Catholic priest, made some very good points that may interest you.
Sincerely,

Ryan, I took a glance at Fr. Macrae’s blog. Interesting what he says, though I think his understanding that Hawking is not necessarily hostile to religious faith is based on not knowing things that were left out of the WSJ excerpt which served as Fr. Macrae’s source. Thanks for calling it to my attention.
